Baroque & Classical Competition
*Concerto Competion* April 30th, 2023
The Grace Notes School of Music is holding a Baroque & Classical Competition to promote music excellence in young people of the Greater Baton Rouge Area. Students (Violin/Viola/Cello/Piano/Harp) that are 18 years or younger are invited to participate no matter their level of ability. Beginning players will perform for one to two judges and receive a certificate of excellence based on their qualifying scores. Intermediate and advanced players that are performing a concerto or other piece of music that has an orchestral accompaniment option will be competing for the chance to perform with a professional orchestra at a special showcase concert in May of 2023. Below is more information and a registration form which must be submitted by April 1st:
The competition for our beginning students and those advanced students that are not playing concertos will be at Grace Notes, 10621 N Oak Hills Pkwy.
Level 1 (Suzuki Book 1 & 2 or equivalent) should have one or two contrasting pieces to perform. Each student will be assigned an audition time between 1pm and 3pm in which he or she will play for one judge and be scored. Those with qualifying scores will receive a certificate of excellence.
Level 2 (Suzuki Book 3, 4, or 5 or equivalent) & Level 3 (Students at this level have typically been playing for at least 5 years and are working on technically challenging concertos, etudes, and showpieces) should have one to two contrasting pieces not to exceed 10 minutes total. Each student will be assigned an audition time between 1pm and 3pm and auditions will take place in a room that will have seating for listeners and be open to the public. Piano accompaniment is strongly encouraged. Those with qualifying scores will receive a certificate of excellence and the judges will announce those students who earn special mention.
Concerto Competition: Students that have prepared a movement of a concerto from the Baroque or Classical period will perform in an open recital format on the evening of April 30th. All students will need to make arrangements for piano accompaniment on that day. Winners will be selected from the following age groups: 10 years and under; 11 - 14 years old; 15 - 18 years old. Those that have been chosen by our judges will be offered the opportunity to perform with a professional symphony orchestra in May of 2023 for a concert showcase.
There is a registration fee of $35 for each participant that will be collected on the day of the competition.
