Dr. Gergana Tonkova-Ilcheva was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She received her first violin lessons at the age of five. As a high school student under the guidance Tatiana Krasteva she won two of the most prestigious competitions in Bulgaria – 1st prize at the Svetoslav Obretenov National Competition in Provadia, 1984, and 1st prize at the Nedyalka Simeonova National Competition in Haskovo, 1986. Among her other prizes are the 1st prize at the Competition for the best performance of Bulgarian Chamber Music at the Plovdiv School of Music in 1988 and the Union of Bulgarian Composers' Award for the Best performance of bulgarian contemporary work at the Dobrin Petkov National Competition in Plovdiv, 1995.

Dr. Gergana Tonkova-Ilcheva has performed as a soloist for leading orchestras in Bulgaria and as a performer of chamber music at concerts for the Union of Bulgarian Composers, New Bulgarian Music, Bulgarian Society of New Music, and at festivals such as "March Music Days", "Musica Nova" and "Sofia Music Weeks". She has also made recordings for Radio Plovdiv and the Bulgarian National Radio. Her main musical interests are in contemporary music. She has premiered performances and recordings of works by leading Bulgarian composers such as Lazar Nikolov, Vassil Kazandjiev, Artin Poturlyan and Emil Tabakov.
